What lifts your score

  • Pay every bill on time. Repayment history for the last two years is on your file, month by month. One missed payment shows for two years.
  • Space out credit applications. Every application is recorded, even if you are declined. Several in a few months looks like trouble.
  • Lower or close unused card limits. Fewer open limits helps your score and your borrowing power, since lenders count 3% of each limit as a monthly repayment.
  • Fix errors for free. If something on your report is wrong, ask the bureau or the lender to correct it. You never need to pay a credit repair company.

Before you apply for a loan

  • Check both bureaus. Each has its own file and lenders pick which one to use, so an old debt can show on one and not the other.
  • Look for defaults and old addresses. A default stays for five years even after you pay it. Make sure any paid default is marked as paid.
  • Give yourself time. Fixes and new on-time payments take a month or two to show, so check three to six months before you apply.

A guide, not credit advice. Score bands are the ranges each bureau publishes, as reported in November 2026; each lender decides for itself and also looks at your income, expenses and repayment history. Yeeld isn't paid by the services linked above.
